May
The season's true opener. Honeyberries are usually first off the mark, ripening from mid-May in a warm spring — weeks ahead of anything else. Wild strawberries begin in the last week of the month in sheltered, sunny sites, and early garden strawberry varieties start showing colour under cloches or in a warm bed.
Jobs this month: net everything before the blackbirds beat you to it, keep newly planted canes watered through dry spells, and tuck straw under strawberry trusses to keep the fruit clean and slug-free.
June
Strawberry season proper. Garden strawberries peak throughout June, summer raspberries begin toward the end of the month, and gooseberries are ready for cooking (green, tart) early in the month, softening toward dessert ripeness by late June. Tayberries and early loganberries can begin in a warm southern garden toward month's end.

Peak season — more is ripe this month than any other. Jobs this month: pick every two to three days — little and often beats one big weekend sweep. Freeze or process gluts the same day they're picked, and get jam made while the fruit is at its best. Summer-prune redcurrants and gooseberries once their crop is off.
August
The garden's busiest month for variety. Blackberries begin, alongside dewberries (which are usually a few weeks ahead of true blackberries), boysenberries, blueberries continue, and wild damsons start ripening in old hedgerows. Elderberries begin turning black toward the end of the month — remember, cook before eating.

September
Hedgerow season begins in earnest. Jobs this month: start sloe gin as soon as the fruit is dark and slightly soft (or freeze the sloes for 24 hours instead of waiting for frost). November
Mostly hedgerow stragglers by now. Late hawthorn haws and rosehips can still be picked, sloes hang on well into the month (frost improves them), and Chilean guava is often still fruiting in a mild, sheltered spot — one of the latest fresh berries of the year.

December to April: The Quiet Months
Nothing fresh is fruiting outdoors, but this is when next year's harvest gets built: bare-root planting continues in any frost-free spell through to March, winter pruning of established bushes happens while they're dormant, and autumn-fruiting raspberries get cut to ground level in February. If you preserved well over summer, this is when jams, cordials and the freezer stash earn their keep. By March the first blackthorn blossom is showing in the hedges — and the whole calendar starts again.
