Blueberry season by variety
Blueberry varieties are grouped as early, mid-season and late, and the group matters more than the calendar. Planting one of each is the simplest way to spread the harvest, and it also helps pollination, since bushes set more fruit when a second variety flowers nearby. How to tell when blueberries are ripe
Colour is not enough. A blueberry turns fully blue a few days before it is at its sweetest, so wait until the berries are deep blue all over with no pink or green near the stalk, then give them a few more days. Ripe berries come away into your palm with the lightest touch. If you have to tug, they are not ready. Berries ripen unevenly along the same cluster, so expect to pick the same bush every few days.
Growing your own for a longer season
Most UK gardens do not have acidic soil, which is why blueberries are usually grown in pots of ericaceous compost.
